Quotes from Avatamsaka Sutra, Vol. 40

"For example, there is a majestic tree king in the moraine of wilderness. If the roots are hydrated with water, the branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits will all flourish. The same is true for the bodhi tree king in this wilderness moraine of birth and death. For better illustration, we can parallel all sentient beings as the roots of trees. All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as fruits and flowers, benefiting all sentient beings with their water of great compassion, which will enable Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in achieving their fruits of Prajna. Why is this so? If the bodhisattvas benefit all sentient beings with their water of great compassion, they will then be able to attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi.Therefore, Bodhi befits all sentient beings. If there are no sentient beings, all Bodhisattvas will not be able to attain the fruition of the supreme, complete, and perfect enlightenment."
